"Gene Fullmer wore down a game Spider Webb Thursday night in their middleweight boxing bout at Derks Field. In a classic 10th round, which had both fighters swinging for the KO punch and the crowd screaming itself into near-hysteria, Fullmer took command to grab a unanimous decision and a possible shot at the middleweight title again. Webb and Fullmer banged away at each others heads, hearts, ribs and mid-sections for round after round, probing for a weakness which could be turned into victory. But whenever Fullmer would bull Webb to the ropes, Webb would dance out with his jabs to the head, which at times had Fullmer's head bobbing like a metronome. Gene needed his tremendous showing in the 9th and 10th rounds to grab the decision. There were no knockdowns and the only damage to either fighter was the eye cuts which Gene always gets in a tough fight." -Salt Lake Tribune

Post fight comments
- "Webb is a rough man to fight. He's a good counter-puncher. In the early rounds he would spin and counter. He was in and out and I tried to keep inside and punch short. But I finally wore him down." -Gene Fullmer
- "I landed the cleanest punches and had him missing all through the fight. Still, you can't take anything away from him. He had as much at stake as I did. He boxed better than I have ever seen him. He was landing jabs, something I didn't expect." -Spider Webb
- "It's better to lose in a great fight than win in a bad one. We have no complaints, although Spider won in my book." -Hec Knowles, Webb's manager
- "This was Gene's best fight and Webb was the best man Gene has fought. We want to fight Sugar Ray Robinson for the title again." -Marv Jensen, Fullmer's manager
