Poirier used his right hand effectively during the bout, cutting Perez over the right eye with the punch in the 4th round. The cut would bleed for all but two of the remaining rounds. Perez had been a substitute for Christian Christensen, who was not permitted to fight, because his manager Charles Bauer had been suspended by the commission.
