In his prime, George Godfrey was always referred to in American press as "Boston's George Godfrey" or the coloured heavyweight from Boston. Only in his very last couple of years as a pro, after his ring-skills had visibly faded, did white sportswriters refer to the wily veteran Canadian battler as "Ol' Chocolate".
Boston Herald Oct. 19, 1901: "George Godfrey, the boxer and boxing instructor, died Thursday afternoon at his home in Revere. Tuberculosis was the immediate cause of death. He was 48 years of age. He had accumulated considerable property and owned much real estate in Chelsea and Revere. He leaves a widow and one son George Godfrey Jr."
- Inducted June 24, 1990 in the PEI Sports Hall of Fame
- "The 'Real' George Godfrey" by Lou Eisen: [1]
