George Araujo 134 lbs beat Paddy DeMarco 135 lbs by SD in round 10 of 10

"George Araujo figured he won a shot at lightweight champion Jimmy Carter last night when he grabbed a split decision over Paddy DeMarco in a MSG 10 rounder. Araujo stabbed and ran in the early stages but his accurate counter-punching, especially hooks to the body, did pile up points. Often DeMarco swarmed inside, head down with both fists flailing to smother a slightly confused Araujo. The crowd of 5,163 to see the nationally televised unofficial elimination bout, seemed to agree with the decision. There were some dissenters of course, who resented Araujo's backward tactics. Just as many seemed to object to DeMarco's holding and billygoat tactics. Araujo had a cut atop of his head that he said came from a butt. DeMarco had ugly red bruises around both eyes and a slight cut under the right." -Associated Press

  • Unofficial AP scorecard - 4-4-2 with Araujo holding an edge on points, 5-4.
  • Unofficial UP scorecard - 6-4 Araujo
  • Gate - $16,470.00

  • "Where's Christenberry? Let him reverse this one. I thought I won it 6-4. The referee had it even better for me than I did." -Paddy DeMarco, referencing the decision of the recent Billy Graham - Joey Giardello fight, which NYSAC chairman, Robert Christenberry reversed.
