George Barton was reported to have had a professional record of 58 wins and just 3 losses. His notable victory was over "Terrible" Terry McGovern in 1904. He went on to become one of the best boxing coaches in Minnesota history. Among his pupils was the great "St. Paul Phantom," Mike Gibbons. He also officiated in more than 12,000 professional and amateur bouts over a period of 35 years. He was known as one of the best sports writers in Minnesota history, as the Sports Editor of the Minneapolis Journal and the Minneapolis Daily News. His 1957 book, "My Lifetime in Sports," was a major selling piece of literature, and remains a popular buy among sports books collectors.
