George Benton 158 lbs beat Johnny Morris 159 lbs by SD in round 12 of 12

"Sixth ranked George Benton, of Philadelphia, is the new Pennsylvania state middleweight champion, but for a while Monday night it looked as though Johnny Morris, Pittsburgh, had retained his title over 12 rounds. Benton's best rounds were the 4th, when he caught Morris with two hard rights, the 6th when he hit Morris repeatedly and the 9th when he scored with 34 punches." -Associated Press

  • The officials at first had declared Morris the winner on a split decision before inspecting the cards and realizing referee Pete Tomasco had tabulated incorrectly. He had actually scored for Benton by a score of 56-55 rather than the announced 55-54 for Morris. Benton, who had since left the ring and was in the dressing room, had to be called back to receive his title of Pennsylvania middleweight champion.
