George Chuvalo 209 lbs beat Alex Miteff 205 lbs by SD in round 10 of 10

"After picking up a close victory over Alex Miteff in his own stamping grounds, George Chuvalo was squawking, of all things, about a hometown decision. Maintaining his efforts would have received better recognition elsewhere, the Toronto battler gained a 10 round split decision over the Argentinean at Maple Leaf Gardens Monday night. In the 6th round Miteff, cut above the left eye in the first by the Canadian heavyweight champion, gushed blood when another punch reopened the wound. Referee Bobby Laurence suspended hostilities and called Dr. Thomas Flommerfelt into the ring to look things over. The doctor ruled Miteff was in shape to carry on. Miteff, a neat counter-puncher, came back to hold off Chuvalo with an effective left hook to the body and head." -Canadian Press

  • Miteff's cut on the left eye required 12 stitches to close.

Official scorecards

  • Referee Bobby Laurence - 48-44 Chuvalo
  • Judge Jackie Johnston - 49-48 Miteff
  • Judge Dr. Les Black - 48 1/2-48 Chuvalo

Post fight comment

  • "I can't understand how one judge voted against me. I was in control of the fight all the way and it's beyond me why they didn't stop it in the 6th round." -George Chuvalo
