George Chuvalo 205 lbs lost to Joe Erskine 212 lbs by DQ at 1:27 in round 5 of 10

"Any plans Canadian heavyweight George Chuvalo had for a title bout with world champion Floyd Patterson were shelved last night when Chuvalo was disqualified in the 5th round of his bout with Joe Erskine of Wales. Referee Sammy Luftspring awarded the fight to Erskine at 1:27 of the 5th round when he ruled that Chuvalo had butted Erskine repeatedly. The butt that ended the 5th was clear to ringsiders and opened a cut on Erskine's left eyebrow that required three stitches to close. He was also bruised under the eye and over the temple. Erskine claimed he was butted eight times during the scheduled 10 round fight." - United Press International

  • Chuvalo claimed he only retaliated for getting thumbed in the eye twice by Erskine.
  • Canadian referee Sammy Luftspring had warned Chuvalo as early as the 2nd round for his use of the head.
  • The Canadian Press had the fight even after four rounds, awarding the first two rounds to Chuvalo and the 3rd and 4th to Erskine.
