- One Australian source in 1912 reported Gunther claimed to have been born in Australia. This might explain why British and French papers referred to him as Australian.
- Gunther was not an Australian, as sometimes shown, and John M. Hogg has never been able to find a single fight for him there despite very extensive newspaper searches. The claim that he was an Australian was made when he began boxing. He was an American sailor who went AWOL soon after he began his career and was then kicked out of the navy (information from Boston Globe).
