Levine started fighting in 1917 at the age of 16--almost all of his early fights were held at different sites in Brooklyn, New York. Levine became a hero on July 3, 1926, while training for his title shot, when he returned inside a burning gymnasium to save his sleeping trainer, Izzy Sarber. This occurred at Pompton Lakes, New Jersey. Early in Levine's career he fought under the name of George Lavigne. Ranked by Eddie Mead in Self Defense magazine as the #8 welterweight in the world for 1926. Many of Levine's fights from 1917 through 1919 have yet to be documented.

Levine was inactive in 1930-31.
