This fight was the final of the National Boxing Association light heavyweight tournament to fill the vacant championship. Maxie Rosenbloom had been stripped of the championship on June 6, 1931, for failing to defend his title.

Referee Phil Collins scored the fight 57-43 for Nichols. Judge Ed Klein scored it 51-49 for Nichols. Judge John Houghteling scored it 51-49 for Maier.
