Pro Boxer: Record

George Salvadore was a boxer of Portuguese extraction from Edgartown, Massachusetts. His early and late managers are not known, but for a time in the mid-1930s he was managed by Joe Gould, best known as manager of Jim Braddock.

Incorrect claims were made several times on the behalf of Salvadore. For instance, in 1931 the Boston Globe carried the statement that he had won 52 of 55 fights, which is plainly contradicted by his known record from contemporary newspaper accounts. At another time it was stated that he had over 340 fights, which is plainly ridiculous. The Tacoma News Tribune credited him with 180 fights as of December 13, 1938, which is possible but unlikely, unless he had a considerable number of amateur fights and these were being included in the total.

Salvadore's record was first published in the 1936 Everlast Boxing Record and 1936 Post Boxing Record Book, the same in both. Most of the fights in those records have been accounted for and several have been found that did not appear in them.

Here is a list of fights in that record that have not been found and may or may not have actually occurred:

Frankie Rose, W ko 4 (twice); Kid Edwards, W ko 3; Teddy Reynolds, W ko 4; Muggsy Mandell, W ko 4; Buster Mello, W Points 6; Joe Thomas, W Points 6 (a second time); Young Arruda, W Points 6; Tony Carney, W Points 8 (three times); Kid Smoke, W Points 4; Frankie Oliver, W Points 4; Frankie Erne, W Pts 8; Eddie Richards, W Points 4; Johnny Hanlon, W Points 8; Frankie Moore, W Points 8; Frankie Anderson, W Points 8; Freddie Slade, W Points 8; Johnny Delano, W Points 8; Charley Longo, W Points 6; Golfball Bernard, W Points 6; Billy Hines, W Points 8; Tony Aquaro, W Points 10 (a second time); Tom Sasso, W ko 4; Mel Doherty, W ko 6; Joe Barry, W ko 7; Manuel Villa, W Pts 10; Gallito Ramirez, W ko 4; Ralph Chong, W ko 7; Eddie Glynn, W Pts 10.

It seems clear that some of these fights are mistakes and duplications of fights that have been traced (Eddie Glynn for Eddie Flynn); fights for Joe Thomas and Tony Aquaro, etc). The early record of Salvadore, shown here, was compiled mainly from the Boston Globe, and it seems unlikely that many of these fights would have gone unreported. The fights shown here have all been verified from contemporary sources.

Salvadore later moved to Texas and fought there, then back to the east, and finally to California. His last fight was with Russian boxer Andre Shelaeff in San Francisco, and resulted in Shelaeff's death, causing Salvadore to himself retire from the ring.
