According to the Oct. 8, 1927 Wenatchee Daily World (Wenatchee, WA, USA) newspaper, Siler was from Oakland, CA. He was the nephew of the popular old-time referee George Siler, who reportedly had officiated bouts featuring Joe Gans,Battling Nelson, and Jimmy Britt. While boxing in Greater Cincinnati, Siler earned the nickname "Silver Shower" Siler for the coins thrown into the ring when he fought. According to the December 27, 1925 Cincinnati Enquirer, Siler served in World War I, having enlisted in Erie, Pennsylvania.
