Obituary

GERRY Storey Jnr, eldest son of iconic Irish amateur boxing coach of the same name, has sadly passed away. The brother of Olympian and former British Super middleweight champion Sam Storey (25-6) died in his native Belfast on Sunday January 26, 2025. Junior had a short professional career of three bouts, at light-heavyweight. In June 1988 he made his pro debut in York Hall, but lost the Bethnal Green battle on a narrow six round points setback to Roger McKenzie. He won against George Carmen at the same venue and then bowed out after losing over six rounds to John Williams in January 1989, also at Bethnal Green. Before turning over Gerry Jnr, who represented Northern Ireland at the 1986 Commonwealth Games, won three Ulster Elite amateur titles, starting as a lightheavy in 1984, down to middle in 1985 - and back up to light heavy in 1986. He lost by points decision to Limerick's Tony De Loughrey in the 1983 national Elte light heavyweight decider in Dublin. He represented the Belfast Holy Family club - and after quitting the pro ranks joined his renowned club and international trainer Gerry Sns in coaching up and coming boxers at the north Belfast gym. The Ulster Amateur Boxing Council expressed condolences: "Ww just finished the Ulster Elite finals in Belfast's Girwood Hub on Saturday evening to later hear of Gerry's sad passing. He was a three time Ulster champion and an excellent boxing coach. Our deepest sympathy to the Storey family."
