He had grown up in farm country near Everson and Sumas, in northern Washington state. He had some bare-knuckle bouts in the nearby Deming Tavern and the Goshen Grange. His grandmother Louise lived in Mount Vernon, WA. Tingley would fight for years in the Pacific Northwest area during the early 1930s.
