"Gus Lesnevich, light heavyweight champion, clinched a shot at the heavyweight crown by achieving his fourth straight victory over Tami Mauriello on a TKO at 33 seconds of the 7th round at MSG last night. Referee Ruby Goldstein stopped the bout in the 7th to save the blood-smeared and helpless Mauriello from further punishment. Goldstein wanted to halt the bout when Tami staggered to his corner at the end of the 6th round but pled for Goldstein to give him one more chance. Lesnevich, 180 1/2, floored Tami, 201 1/2, for the count of nine with a left hook to the jaw in the 4th round. That was the lone knockdown of the fight, but in every session Mauriello was staggered at least three times." -United Press
