"WBC lightweight champion Guts Ishimatsu of Japan retained his title Thursday night with an unpopular but unanimous 15 round decision over Tury Pineda of Mexico. Pineda forced the fight all the way against Ishimatsu, who backed away and only occasionally carried the fight with short, choppy right hands. He appeared surprised when referee Jimmy Scarmosi of San Antonio announced he was the winner." -United Press International
- Unofficial UPI scorecard - 147-144 Pineda
Post fight comments
- "I did not like the decision. I expected Ishimatsu to be in better shape. He only tried to fight occasionally. Pineda forced the fight all the way through and kept scoring with his left hand." -Ramon Velasquez, WBC President
- "The champion's effective punches were his head butting. I don't care much for the decision." -Tury Pineda
