Wilson was an overwhelming favorite at 5-to-1 coming into the bout, however, he turned in what Los Angeles Times boxing writer Cal Whorton, called "one of the poorest exhibitions of his 10-year professional boxing career." Wilson appeared to have the advantage over the first four rounds, hitting Barrows, with assorted right hands to the head and body. Wilson's accuracy waned in the middle rounds, however as Barrows, landed frequently with an assortment of head shots.
Wilson had been mentioned as an opponent for Sugar Ray Robinson in his upcoming October appearance at the Olympic Auditorium. Even though this was Wilson's third straight defeat, he would still land the bout with Robinson, who would stop him in seven rounds.
