Barnes obtained his New York State Athletic Commission judge's license in April 1921. In the October 25, 1958 Saturday Evening Post magazine, in an article entitled "Let's Abolish Boxing," he argued that boxing had reached the point where he felt he could no longer support it, because it had "fallen into moral turpitude and physical derogation." He argued that boxing had become unsafe. That article aroused publicity, resulting in Barnes resigning as a boxing judge and apologizing to NYSAC Chairman Julius Helfand for not acknowledging Helfand's efforts to provide safeguards for boxers, and a reply letter to the Saturday Evening Post from Dr. Mal Stevens, chairman of the Medical Advisory Board of the NYSAC, describing Barnes's article as "not factual and misleading."
