The Ring, April 1952 reported that Berntsen died in an accident while working as a rigger in the Atlantic Basin Shipyards, Brooklyn. He was doing work on board "William Brewster" when he slipped and fell 15 meters. He had quit the ring in 1950. He left behind a wife and two children. Source: "Aftenposten", Oslo, Norway, 14th of January 1952. The Norwegian manager and boxing expert John W. Wiksen found no traces of any Harry Berntsen fights (amateur or pro) in Norway. Berntsen came to USA as a sailor during the WWII. He had a few amateur fights in New York before turning pro in 1945. The Ring magazine tagged him in one instance as the "tough Norwegian sailor."
