Although never a professional boxer, Company Sergeant Harry Daniels represented the Rifle Brigade as an amateur up to and including the Army and Navy Championships. He fought as a lightweight and welterweight, and was the Regimental Champion of India from 1905-14. He also represented England in the 1920 Olympic Games. He was one of at least nine boxers who received the Victoria Cross--Great Britain's highest award for gallantry--during World War I. Daniels was awarded the VC for risking his life by cutting barbed wire while under enemy fire. He also earned the Military Cross for rescuing wounded comrades while again under enemy fire.
