Harry Greb beat Chuck Wiggins by NWS in round 8 of 8

  • Date: 1919-03-03
  • Location: Elks Auditorium, Detroit, Michigan, USA
  • Notes

Newspaper win for Greb according to the Pittsburgh Post which reported that "Greb outfought, outgeneraled, and outguessed Wiggins from the start." Greb went easy on Wiggins at first until the crowd began to shout its disapproval. Then he opened up and "battered Wiggins all around the ring, jabbed him with rights and lefts and easily avoided Chuck's wild rushes." In short, Greb had an easy time. He had originally been slated to meet Ted Block. The Detroit News considered Greb's showing to be a disappointment. "Greb could have put Wiggins away in the first round but held back, missing openings, standing off, slowing up his punches. He danced and tapped, tapped and danced, while Wiggins did little more than cover up." It seems probable that there was an agreement made before the fight to the effect that Greb would go easy on Wiggins if he would substitute for Ted Block.
