Greb "outclassed (Brown) and in the 7th and 8th he jabbed, slashed, and swatted Brown until the latter was weary." At the end of the 8th Brown claimed that his right thumb was broken, and in the 9th he was unable to use it, causing the referee to stop the fight. The Dayton Journal described the conclusion of the fight in more detail, indicating that Brown refused to use his right hand after two physicians examined it.
