Harry Greb 168 lbs lost to Lou Bogash 163 lbs by NWS in round 12 of 12

  • Date: 1923-10-22
  • Location: 1st Regiment Armory, Newark, New Jersey, USA
  • Referee: Henry Lewis

"In a bout teeming with action, Harry Greb, middleweight champion, was outspeeded by Lou Bogash of Bridgeport, Conn., the concensus of opinion being that Bogash carried six rounds to Greb's five, one being even. Those credited to the Bridgeport entry were the 3rd, 5th, 8th, 10th, 11th and 12th, his rally in the last four rounds bringing home the verdict after Greb had had all the better of the early going. The champion won the honors in the 1st, 2nd, 6th, 7th and 9th rounds. Because no decisions are permitted in New Jersey, the fact tht both men were over the middleweight limit, Greb weighing 166 pounds and Bogash 163, honor and not the title went with the latter's victory. The bout was a rough one from the outset." -International News Service

“Greb earned a decision by a fair margin...There was a difference of opinion last night of whether Greb or Bogash had earned a victory. There seems, however, no question that the middleweight champion, by his ability to hit with either hand from almost any angle and his decidedly aggressive tactics, finished well ahead of the sturdy chap from Bridgeport, who depended largely on a lunging left and who in the fighting invariably was outpunched by Greb…the champion had much superior footwork and his stepping around and feinting often had Bogash tied in knots.

It does not look as if Bogash ever would be able to earn a decision over Greb. He lacks speed and has a style that is easy to fathom. He goes through the same tactics round after round, and it is easy for a man of Greb’s all-around ability to make Bogash’s attacks, as a rule, futile.” --Newark Star Eagle
