Harry Yates was the third born of six brothers; the others being Dick, John, George, Alf and Bert. Their father, a ganger on the railway, taught them all to box. Harry took part in numerous exhibition bouts (which do not appear on his record) at Boodle Street and Park Street, Ashton in 1922 and 1923 before having his first recorded contest in 1924.
Harry's brother George Yates also boxed as a professional.
