"Hector 'Macho' Camacho battered defending WBC lightweight champion Jose Luis Ramirez in the early rounds Saturday night, then hung on to win the title on a unanimous 12-round decision. Camacho hammered Ramirez at will in the early going, knocking him down for a six-count in the 3rd round. He continued to punch away at Ramirez's face, and the champion's nose began bleeding heavily. Ramirez appeared unable to get into the fight as his face became splattered with blood. By the 6th round, Ramirez also had suffered a cut on the cheek. But he was finally beginning to return some of the blows. By the 8th round, Ramirez began scoring some blows on the challenger, who frequently went into clinches in an effort to escape the fury of Ramirez's in-close punches. By the late rounds, Ramirez took charge of the fight, but it was too late and Camacho kept moving away." -Associated Press
