"Australia's Hector Thompson won the Australasian welterweight title tonight by stopping titleholder Ali Afakasi in the 6th of the scheduled 15 rounds. A deep cut over Afakasi's right eye about a minute into the round spelt the end for the game Samoan-born New Zealander. The referee, Mr. Bevan Weir, wasted little time in calling the ringside doctor in and he, in turn, was quick to call a halt. Thompson, the Commonwealth and Australian light-welterweight champion, failed to assert the superiority in the early rounds that many had expected of him.
