"Commonwealth light welterweight boxing champion Hector Thompson of Australia defeated Argentinian Carlos Gimenez on points in a 10 round fight here Friday night. Thompson, fighting at only a 1/2 pound over the lightweight limit, conceded 5 1/2 lbs. to Gimenez, the Argentine junior welterweight champion, and won with plenty of spare. Referee Des Crabbe had only a two-point margin but this was flattering to the Argentinian. Thompson took control from the 5th round and though he had some periods of apparent sluggishness, at no time did he lose control. There were no knockdowns but Thompson repeatedly startled Gimenez with the crispness of his left hook and right cross and the power of his body punching. Gimenez showed great resilience and when Thompson took his breathers Gimenez was quick to carry the fight back to him." -United Press International
