Hector Thompson 138 lbs beat Joe Tetteh 139 lbs by PTS in round 15 of 15

  • Date: 1973-03-26
  • Location: Festival Hall, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia
  • Referee: Terry Reilly

"Brisbane fight manager, Bobby Neill, disputed a close points decision against his boxer Joe Tetteh for the Commonwealth light-welterweight title at Festival hall in Brisbane tonight. The title was won by Hector Thompson of Brisbane, on points over 15 three minute rounds. Tetteh, 31, formerly of Ghana, weighed 139 and Thompson, 23, weighed 133. Tetteh ended the fight with blood flowing from his right eye after he had weathered a barrage of lefts and rights from Thompson. Thompson and Tetteh were even on points going into the 15th round after one of the toughest light-welterweight fights seen in Brisbane for some time. Both boxers had taken tremendous punishment but there were no knockdowns in the fight. The decision was booed by a section of the large crowd." -The Canberra Times
