"Commonwealth junior welterweight champion Hector Thompson retained his title in a 15 round bout against former titleholder, Joe Tetteh of Ghana, at Festival Hall, Brisbane, last night. Thompson won on points in an unimpressive fight. The champion, eight years younger than his opponent, was well ahead on points at the beginning of the 15th round. The last round saw Tetteh desperately trying for a knockout but Thompson was too fit and scored with heavy lefts to the head and body. Time and again Thompson failed to follow up his advantage and could have scored a knockout on a number of occasions. He staggered Tetteh in the 13th and 15th rounds but failed to knock him out. The aging Tetteh was courageous throughout and continually tried for a knockout. However, his punches weren't strong enough, although he almost scored a knockdown in the 2nd round when he stung the champion with a hard right to the head." -The Canberra Times
