- After this bout, Lewis management group, January Fighters, headed up by actor Ryan O'Neal, announced the signing of the Hedgemon Lewis v Billy Backus 15 rounder to take place in Syracuse, NY, on June 16th. This bout would be contesting the vacant NY recognised world welterweight title which NY had stripped Jose Napoles of due to his reneging on a contracted third match with Billy Backus.
