Armstrong won every round, with perhaps the exception of the second, which the Cleveland Plain Dealer felt was even. Garrison was cut around both eyes early in the bout, though he continued to punch back throughout. By the 5th and 6th round, Garrison's legs began to appear unsteady, as Armstrong hit him with an assortment of blows. In the 7th, a left hook and a right hand to the chin by Armstrong put Garrison down for a nine-count. A similar left-right attack put Garrison down again, and this time referee Benny Leonard did not bother to count.
