"Henry Cooper of London retained his British and Empire heavyweight title at Earls Court here tonight by defeating Joe Erskine of Cardiff. The referee stopped the scheduled 15 round bout in the 12th round after Erskine had taken heavy punishment and was lying helpless through the ropes. Cooper dropped Erskine twice for seven counts before he finished him off at 2:55 in the 12th. Although Erskine was helpless after Cooper's final two-fisted attack and obviously was out for the count, referee Eugene Henderson stpped in immediately after Erskine went down. He stopped the fight, so the result was a TKO." -Reuters
