"Henry Cooper of England retained his British and Empire heavyweight titles here by stopping Joe Erskine of Wales at the end of the 9th round. A strangely inept Cooper was lucky to retain his titles in the way he did last night. Erskine was ahead on points when the referee stopped the fight at the end of the 9th round because of a bad cut over the Welshman's left eye. After the fight Cooper's manager said that the champion had injured his right hand early in the fight." -Reuters
