Holman Williams 159 lbs beat Jack Chase 157 lbs by PTS in round 12 of 12

  • Date: 1944-02-21
  • Location: Civic Auditorium, San Francisco, California, USA
  • Referee: Frankie Brown 69-63

"Jack Chase still is middleweight champion of California, even though for the second time in almost as many weeks he lost a decision to Holman Williams last night in the San Francisco Auditorium. Chase last night was nimble afoot and he constantly scored with a light, clubbing right to the head of his opponent, but Williams forced the fight and outpunched Jack in the close infighting. Chase was off to an early start, but Williams finally caught up with him and beat a merry tattoo on the chin and midfiff. Chase took a particularly sever lacing in the 9th and appeared on the verge of going down, but he didn't. Chase made the error of attempting to slug it out in the 12th and final round, thereby playing directly into the hands of Williams. The fight was a fast and entertaining one and refuted the charge return matches never are as good as the original." -Oakland Tribune

  • At this time California state title matches were scheduled for 15 rounds and challengers must be a state resident for at least six months, which is why Chase's title was not at stake.
