Cooms died of a fractured skull the morning after his December 23, 1935 bout in Provo, Utah at the Park Ro-She. For the past three weeks prior to his death, Cooms had complained of throbbing headaches after each of his fights. He had complained of headaches after a December 19 bout in Springville. It was possible that he had sustained an injury in a previous fight or while playing football. He had been born and raised in Springville, Utah, and was a senior at Springville High School, as well as a member of the L.D.S. church.

This was the second ring fatality in Utah County in sixteen months.
