Lindsey had moved from Alabama where he was born, to Akron. He was a graduate of East High School, where he played football.

Lindsey was the first black named bailiff in Akron Municipal Court. Lindsey was also the president of the Akron chapter of the NAACP. Lindsey moved to Washington, DC in 1940 and opened the first black-managed Western Union Agency. Lindsey also worked as an investigator for a prominent Washington lawyer, became a full-time police officer, and after a medical retirement he worked as a real estate agent, until shortly before his death.

Lindsey's brother Carl was also boxer under the name Sammy Harris. Harris died of injuries sustained in a 1931 bout in Johnstown, PA.
