Howard Mayberry started fighting around 1917 in Duluth, MN. His family lived in Morgan Park. In some newspaper articles of the day, he is referred to as the "former Duluth newsboy." (Mayberry was reported by the Boxing Blade to have started boxing in 1917 in Duluth, and had 90 fights as of July 1924, so many bouts are missing from the early portion of his career.)

By 1921 he was in the United States Navy, stationed aboard the U.S.S. Wyoming (at Bremerton, WA, for a time). He served until around at least late 1922. (On Sep 19, 1922, he fought a Sailor Javier aboard-ship while en route from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where he and other American navy boxers had participated in an international tournament with champions of the British Navy in mid-September, to New York.)

While in the Navy he was the 1921 bantam champion of the Atlantic Fleet, then became ill and did not compete for the title in 1922. He was considered at the time to be the best bantamweight in the entire United States Navy. [1]

After his naval career, Mayberry apparently settled for a time in Michigan, but ran into contractual problems with the Avenue A.C. in Detroit. Around 1923, he moved to Canada after being suspended in Michigan.

In November 1933 he was seriously injured in a car accident, and died the following July after surgery to remove his leg.
