- Referee: Harry Gibbs
"British and European featherweight champion Howard Winstone may have earned himself a world title fight when he came off the floor Tuesday night to decisively decision Joe (Rafiu) King over 10 rounds at the Empire Pool. Winstone was knocked down for an eight count by a vicious left hook in the 2nd round, but having survived the count, he proceeded to pummel King for the remainder of the fight and emerge a clear winner." -United Press International
- With Winstone and King rated 4th and 5th in the Ring ratings, this bout was billed as an official eliminator for Sugar Ramos' featherweight title.
- At the noon weigh-in Winstone's manager Eddie Thomas refused to let his fighter in the ring unless referee Jack Hart was removed as referee for the bout. Things were settled when the BBBC officials switched Hart to the main event (Brian Curvis vs. Dave Charnley) and Harry Gibbs switching to the Winstone-King bout.
