"The biggest boxing upset of 1962 was the shock defeat of Britain's featherweight champion Howard Winstone, Merthyr, 127, by unrated Leroy Jeffery, Saginaw, Mich., 126 in the 2nd round of a scheduled 10-rounder. Winstone opened in his usual brisk fashion. His precision left leads kept the American at a distance, and it seemed the large crowd was set to witness another Winstone win. The 2nd round, however, told a different story. Jeffery forced Winstone back and with a right to the jaw had the Welshman on the canvas for an 8-count. Winstone then made the mistake of electing to slug it out with the hard-hitting Jeffery. Jeffery piled in punches from all angles and a solid left had Winstone down again. Winstone, bleeding from a cut left eyebrow then staged a brief rally that failed to come off. Jeffery punched away at the sagging British champion and Winstone went down again.
