According to Ring Magazine: April 1930, p. 10, Hugh O'Neil weighed 190 pounds and stood 5 feet 8 inches. He had been born in Antrim in the north of Ireland, and emigrated to America, becoming a gold miner in California. He had "whipped" Tom Facey, in twenty rounds at Tuolumne County, California, in his only bout prior to 1865. He then engaged in what was believed to be a record-length 185-round bare-knuckle bout with Con Orem January 7, 1865 in Montana.
