According to a news item with a Melbourne dateline in the December 12, 1917 edition of the Ballarat Courier (Victoria, Australia) on the Trove website, that there was official information had been received that Hughie Mehegan had died from nephritis at the 53rd Casualty Clearing Station in France on November 28, 1917. The information had been received by Hughie's brother, George. Hughie had enlisted during May 1916 and went to France "some months ago." According to a letter which arrived "recently," Hughie "was with an Australian regiment that took part in a great deal of hard fighting."
According to the Find A Grave website, Drv Eugene "Daley" Mehegan died on November 28, 1917 and was buried in the Bailleul Communal Cemetery Extension, which is located in Nord-Pas-de-Calais, France. According to a note on the website, Mehegan was 31 years of age and had been serving as a driver in the Australian Army Service Corps at the time of his death.
