Santillan died one day after sustaining injuries in a draw against Uruguay's Eduardo Javier Abreu. The fight was held in Buenos Aires and was for the WBC Latino Silver Light Title. Santillan fainted as the result of the fight was being announced. He was rushed to a local hospital, where he lapsed into a coma after undergoing emergency surgery. He died after suffering a cardiac arrest.
