A native of Hollandale Miss., Larry Alexander turned pro at the age of 27 with a third round TKO of Don Martin. His late start in professional boxing, after an amateur career that saw him go 35-5, was of no concern to both Alexander and his trainer. 'I feel that 27 is about the right age to get into heavyweight boxing', Alexander was quoted in the August 31 1977 Greenville Delta Democrat-Times, 'Your body begins maturing at about 27.' His trainer-manager Mac Dukes added: 'If a heavyweight takes care of his body, like Larry has and trains properly, he can fight until he's 40. Jersey Joe Walcott was still fighting when he was 40.' In a pro career that spanned nearly 22 years, Alexander, would go on to win the Great Western Forum heavyweight tournament as well as the NABF heavyweight title.
