Nienhaus, twice a runner-up in the National Golden Gloves, and twice Amateur Athletic Union champion, represented the famed South Broadway Athletic Club in St. Louis. He was a member of the only team which won four National Golden Gloves titles in the same tournament. He was described as nimble and agile and rarely got hit. He was great at making his opponent miss punches and being able to parry blows and catch them on his arms or elbows. Nienhaus, chiefly a bantamweight, reportedly won 73 of his 79 bouts. He was known as the "The Blond Tiger."
