Ricky Nelson, born Nelson Mercado-Crespo, in Manquez, Puerto Rico, moved to Long Island as a youngster. Later, after moving to the Bronx, his uncle William Maya, a top amateur in Puerto Rico, encouraged him to give boxing a try. Nelson enrolled in the boxing classes at the Mt. Carmel CYO Center. He started in 1960 and fought twenty times, winning sixteen, half of them by kayos. He reached the quarter finals of the Golden Gloves as a featherweight in 1962. Nelson launched his professional career on December 12, 1962. The Ring, September, 1963 (page 33, 44).
