Willie Lewis was considered a pioneer of the one-two punch, which is generally credited to have been created by Jem Belcher. In 1920, Lewis was shot three times by an assailant while making a phone call in a booth at the Chateau-Thierry cabaret which Lewis owned along with his employees. He barely survived. He died of cancer in 1949 in New York City.
