In an amateur career of 30 bouts, Gray won 22 via the kayo route, five by decision and lost three. After winning the Golden Gloves in the New England states, Gray won the "Rocky Marciano Trophy" in Lowell, MA, in 1953. Discharged from the service, Gray came to Chicago where Frank Tomaso signed him to a contract.
