Exact date of birth unknown. Reported by the August 21, 1922 edition of the WENATCHEE DAILY WORLD as being 25-years-old then. Also said to have fought 150 bouts by that time. He took up boxing at the age of 14 under the guidance of Lonnie Austin, the former Pacific Coast Lightweight Champion. Fought early on in the Seattle area, with bouts against Sid Michell, Andy Doval, Harry Casey, Freanch Vaise and many others. In 1916 he went to work as a fireman with the O.W.R. & N. railroad, where he was still at by 1922. In 1917 he enlisted in the 23rd Engineers outfit, and sent overseas during World War I. He saw action in three major engagements of the war. He also fought 22 times in France, reportedly winning all. He knocked out LaFavre, the French lightweight, in three rounds. He returned to the Puget Sound area and bought a home at 5342 Eleventh Avenue South in Seattle.
