According to the Sport Folio column in the June 30, 1940 edition of the Truth (Sydney, NSW) on the Trove website, Jim "Darkie" Abbott, a popular boxer and 21 years of age, died on Wednesday (June 26, 1940) in the Mudgee Hospital due to injuries that he sustained when he was caught in the wheels of a cultivator. He was survived by a wife and two children.

According to information found in the Family Tree section of Ancestry.com, one James Frederick Abbott was born on September 23, 1918 in Leadville, New South Wales, Australia and died on June 26, 1940 in the Mudgee Hospital.
